Canals

Contemporary art. Contemporary Catalan artists.

Canals art gallery is the first gallery in the city of Sant Cugat-Barcelona, created by Josep Canals in 1973. From the beginning it has been dedicated to promoting avant-garde art and advocating modernity, from this southern city of Europe located next to Barcelona, capital of Catalonia.

The programme of this art space focuses on artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, and highlights renowned creators and also young emerging artists.

Until 2020, Canals Galería de Arte has organised the Bienal de Arte Contemporáneo Catalán, which since 1977 has been a stimulus for young Catalan creators. Throughout its history, the gallery has participated in numerous international fairs: Arco, Madrid; Lineart, Ghent (Belgium); Interarte, Valencia; Art Jonction, Nice (France); Art London, London …

Previously, the space was located on calle de Alfons Sala, 25, and later it was moved to calle de la Creu, 16. In 2017 the gallery moved to its current headquarters located on calle de Orient, 24, in a unique town house from 1940, a short distance from the Royal Monastery of Sant Cugat, which is listed as a national monument of the 12th and 13th centuries. The exhibition program can be seen in the physical space and also on different Internet platforms.
