The port of Barcelona and beyond

23 May — 24 July, 2024

On the occasion of the Copa América, the Gothsland Art Gallery presents an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Port of Barcelona and the Catalan coast. There are almost fifty works that cover a time range from the end of the 19th century to those made for this exhibition in 2024.

The exhibition offers a tour of barely a hundred works, most pictorial, from 1880 to 2024. The three exhibition spaces of the gallery have been used, in such a way that the visitor will discover the main floor dedicated to the Port of Barcelona, with works that international artists María Corte, Manu Algueró, and Heath Rasmussen have created expressly for this project. Likewise, the evolution and appearance of the port are reflected through artists who are a reference in the History of Art: Ramon Casas, Lola Anglada, Laureà Barrau, Eliseu Meifrén, Modest Urgell, Joan Roig Soler, Carlos Vázquez and also the British John Hassall.

The other two rooms are dedicated to the Catalan Coast and those spaces that served as inspiration for that generation of great masters from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Therefore, the seascapes of Cadaqués deserve a prominent role. Although not only are works from the mythical town shown, they also reflect localities with a special seafaring tradition such as Venice, New York, Sitges, Palma de Mallorca, Lloret de Mar, Montgat, Mataró, Tarragona, Tamarit, and unusual scene from Bangkok.
