Exhibition

‘El tapís de María Girona’

2 September — 25 November, 2026

Canals

Canals Galeria d’Art celebrates its 53-year history by opening the new season with an exhibition dedicated to Maria Girona, one of the most prominent figures in twentieth-century Catalan art. She was the second woman to become involved with the Escola Catalana de Tapís—based within the premises of the Antiga Casa Aymat textile workshop in Sant Cugat—creating a tapestry and contributing, alongside other artists, to the new concepts that emerged there and elevated tapestry to the status of a true artistic medium. These artists placed Sant Cugat and Casa Aymat on the national and international map of textile art.

The exhibition dedicated to Maria Girona brings together a selection of her paintings and the only tapestry she created in Sant Cugat. Of particular significance is the tapestry ‘Oval rosat’, a 105 × 145 cm work created by the artist in June 1967.

This piece is one of the most significant examples of her involvement in the artistic renewal of contemporary tapestry, a movement that brought together some of the country’s most important artists and transformed the traditional language of tapestry into a discipline fully integrated within contemporary art. In this context, Maria Girona contributed a personal, sensitive and innovative perspective.
