Juan Tenorio “Dialogues with the city”

5—30 October, 2023

Juan Antonio Tenorio expresses with his paintings, made of line and color, descriptive of some specific events and places that he has seen and heard throughout his travels, the feelings that are born from reality and towards the world of dreams and interpretations. It stores sensations, but also a diversity of material testimonies that later, at the moment of standing in front of the canvas to create with the shapes, emerge and become essential elements of each painting.

Collages are important in his paintings. But not as complementary formulas in relation to some structures, but for themselves, for what they suggest. An imaginative and self-made person, thanks to his great creative curiosity in relation to everything that surrounds him, he has established concepts that, apparently dispersed in their origins, later fit into the general compositions. We must look carefully at everything he tells us, since nothing he expresses through a plastic discourse that, in principle, is centered on a topic, without leaving its roots, grows and branches into a variety of situations. They are theirs, of course, but they have a lot to do with our collective action, because they are the offspring of informative news, signs and lights that make intentional blinks to draw our attention as citizens of a country and certain moments that we have experienced. shared, without perhaps knowing it, thinking that they also belonged to others.

Tenorio’s painting is, at the same time, active in thought and balanced in forms. He builds with harmony between the themes and his environment, but knows how to get out of everything that could seem like constriction. It has the virtue of being free and maintaining this position, although it knows well the limitations that each person places on others in the name of collective interests. He uses fantasy based on reality, since he knows that from reality he is free to build worlds in which ideas are much more solid and attractive than material realizations.

In the paintings of Juan Antonio Tenorio we appreciate scenes of cities that are recognizable to us, both because we have been there or because we have seen images, but thanks to the artist’s pictorial mastery we can now contemplate them again in works that magnificently capture and evoke the spirit and atmosphere of these cities.
