La Imagen Arde

15 April — 28 May, 2021

Imaginart presents La Imagen Arde (The Image Burns), an exhibition of visual artist Álvaro Oyarzún (Santiago de Chile, 1960). Álvaro Oyarzún presented La Imagen Arde. De lo esencial en el amor for the first time in 1985 at Arte Actual Gallery. Due to the strong erotic tone of some of the artworks presented some visitors qualified them as pornographi and moral offenses. As a consequence, some pieces were removed and the exhibition was closed in less than 24 hours.

The exhibition montage partially recreates the original format of La Imagen Arde in order to remember the events that shook Chile during the dictatorship, and the struggles of artists at that time.

Oyarzún’s paintings convey the youthful rebellion of those who found in the body and desire a space of freedom and a main power for revolution. The artworks of La Imagen Arde reveal the ambivalence of sexuality showing it as an escape from a suffocating and oppressive environment but also as a recurrent tool of structures of power that apply sexual vexations and practice torture. Using this framework Álvaro Oyarzún unfolds a particular political satire and criticizes openly and without euphemisms the Dictatorship of Pinochet.
